Wear and tear

Wear and Tear attends to what materials retain after life has been lived through them. Folds, stains, leaks, abrasions, sagging forms and accumulated damage become records of touch, labour, pressure and time. Old photographs, worn fabrics, discarded clothing and deflated balloons possess an aura because they have been handled, used and altered. Rather than correcting or restoring these traces, the work casts, enlarges or remakes them, allowing vulnerability and exhaustion to remain visible. Wear operates both materially and socially, revealing the accumulated load, maintenance and hidden labour involved in keeping a body, a home or an image functioning.
