Poor Taste

Poor Taste examines how aesthetic judgement is used to classify people as well as objects. Net curtains, pebbledash, faux marble, bright colour, gloss and ornament carry classed associations, separating what is considered refined from what is dismissed as vulgar, excessive or merely decorative. The work neither apologises for these visual languages nor treats them as ironic quotation. Instead, it asks who has the authority to distinguish good taste from bad taste, fine art from decoration and serious culture from everyday culture. Here, beauty and seduction are not opposed to critical meaning.
